An Update from the Hedgebrook Garden

The growth in June is outrageous.  We have gone from famine to feasting and I’ve renewed my job as vegetable pusher.  Actually I’m pretty much just a salad pusher (keep reading for Denise's amazing Caesar dressing), but at least the greens are abundant.  The pea vines are FINALLY flowering and I hope by next week we can start picking.  Strawberries began ripening this week and the first bulbing fennel are beginning to fatten up.  Mustard greens and baby bok choy are making their way into the kitchen and the first big bundle of carrots wound up in Julies Indian stew.Last Friday it struck me that the garden had burst into bloom.  There are flowers everywhere.  And poor Billy, it’s like he’s glued to that John Deer mower.  If it weren’t for books on tape he might go mad.  Instead sometimes I can hear his laughter over the sound of the engine. Denise’s Caesar Salad Dressing

  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced (4 cloves, if you like your salad to bite back!)
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 rounded tsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1- 2 oz. can anchovy fillets
  • Juice of one lemon (to taste)

Mix all ingredients in blender until smooth. After tossing with greens, add Parmesan cheese.
