Giving Opportunities

There are a variety of levels at which to support Hedgebrook and women writers. Every level makes an impact on Equal Voice and we appreciate your support!

Virginia Woolf Level
$1 – $249

Hedgebrook is fueled by Virginia Woolf’s belief that giving a writer a room of her own is the greatest gift of confidence in her voice. Support at this level demonstrates your belief that places like Hedgebrook need to exist.

Emily Dickinson Level
$250 – $499

Emily Dickinson understood the benefits of solitude for writers. Support at this level helps maintain the six hand-crafted cottages that provide each writer a room of her own at Hedgebrook.

Charlotte Bronte Level
$500 – $999

Charlotte Bronte’s early experiences writing with her sisters exemplify the kind of creative community found each evening at Hedgebrook’s Farmhouse table. Support at this level keeps the kitchen stocked for community dinners.

Mary Shelley Level
$1,000 – $2,499

Mary Shelley not only created new literary genres, but also used the stories of women as catalysts to improve society. Support at this level helps us spread the word about amazing women writers and get their books, poems, plays, and articles into readers’ hands.

Alice Walker Level
$2,500 – $9,999

An activist and the first African-American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Alice Walker highlights gender inequality in her novels and poetry to effect cultural change. Support at this level allows us to continue to host a diverse community of writers and amplify marginalized voices.

Women Authoring Change Fellowships
$10,000 – $24,999

Hedgebrook’s Women Authoring Change Fellowships connect donors with Hedgebrook writers to directly support residencies. Fellowships are named after women from history who have authored change, and donors are invited to suggest names of writers who have inspired them. It is also possible to make an “in honor of” designation as part of the Fellowship title.

Gloria Steinem Level
$25,000 +

Start a revolution. Feminist pioneer and alumna Gloria Steinem joined our Creative Advisory Council to bring to light the revolutionary work that Hedgebrook does. Support at this level helps sustain Hedgebrook’s investment in equality for the voices of women in our society for years to come. In Gloria’s words, “Hedgebrook isn’t a retreat…it’s an advance.” A gift at this level will inspire a personal thank you note from Gloria.

Special Program Support Opportunities

Interested in supporting a specific Hedgebrook Program? Your gift can directly support writers participating in any of the specific programs below.

Hedgebrook Women Playwrights Festival

Since the festival’s inauguration in 1988 the annual Hedgebrook Women Playwrights Festival (HWPF) has supported the work of an impressive array of women playwrights and served an important role in the development of new plays by women. This unique festival begins with a “pre-retreat” weekend that includes an intimate group of theatre professionals in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere followed by a two-week retreat at Hedgebrook and culminating with public presentations of excerpts from each play.

Y-WE Write Camp

Founded in 2014, this program is a collaboration between Hedgebrook and Young Women Empowered (Y-WE). Up to forty young women ages 12-18 participate in this leadership and literacy summer camp at the famed Whidbey Institute featuring Hedgebrook alumnae teaching artists.

Singer/Songwriter Residency

In 2012, Hedgebrook launched our first Singer/Songwriter Residency. Modeled after the successful Hedgebrook Women Playwrights Festival, this program hosts up to six women singer/songwriters nominated by a committee of industry professionals in residence at our Whidbey Island retreat for Hedgebrook’s unique alchemy of solitude and community. Alumnae of this program include Brandi Carlile, Mary Lambert and Thao Nguyen.

Hedgebrook Voices

The Hedgebrook Voices series features the work of Hedgebrook alumnae at venues throughout Seattle and the Puget Sound, raising awareness of words and women’s voices. Anchored by a partnership with Elliott Bay Book Company, Hedgebrook has partnered with local venues and funders since 2007 to bring this series to new and increasingly diverse audiences. The variety of locations and formats makes it possible for readers and authors to connect in unexpected ways.
