Hedgebrook Board Member

Judy Belk has a particular passion for exploring stories focused on race, community, social change and family (especially the dysfunctional types)...which means she never has a shortage of material. Her work, primarily essays and short stories, have appeared in a variety of publications including USA Today, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, National Public Radio (NPR) and several literary magazines---all which have given her the confidence to keep plugging away. A Hedgebrook alumna, Judy has received two transformative residencies where she experienced firsthand the power of women authoring change and Hedgebrook’s radical hospitality. A native of Alexandria, Virginia (before it was a tourist destination), Judy currently resides in Los Angeles where she serves as the President and CEO of The California Wellness Foundation. With $1 billion in assets, the Foundation focuses its giving on health equity, justice and advocacy for communities and individuals whose lives and wellness are too often determined by their race, income, immigration status or where they live. Judy received her undergraduate degree in communications from Northwestern University where she was recently awarded the Alumni Medal, the University’s highest honor, for her leadership in social justice and public service.
