BIO: Julie Phillips is the author of The Baby on the Fire Escape: Creativity, Motherhood, and the Mind-Baby Problem, a meditation on maternal identity and artistic greatness in the lives of Alice Neel, Doris Lessing, Ursula K. Le Guin, Audre Lorde, Gwendolyn Brooks, Shirley Jackson, and more. She has written for The New Yorker and Granta, is a regular contributor to 4Columns.org, and is working on a biography of Le Guin. She lives in Amsterdam.
