Hedgebrook Songwriters Residency

“Word writers inform one side of the brain, but with music added, songs enter both sides. There’s a reason why every revolution needs songs!  And there’s a reason why songwriters need Hedgebrook.”

– Gloria Steinem, Hedgebrook Alumna

Songwriters who come to Hedgebrook can unplug from life on the road and in the studio, focus on writing new music, and experience our unique brand of “Radical Hospitality.”  Six songwriters are chosen each year through an international nominations process led by women in the music industry. In a field dominated by men, it is a rare opportunity to be in the company of other female songwriters for ten glorious days. As alumnae, these songwriters join our 30-year old global community of writers, filmmakers, playwrights, screenwriters, poets, and other artists who embody diversity across the spectrum and send their voices back out in the world, fortified and lifted up by their fellow female creatives.

In addition to enjoying abundant and delicious meals, long walks on the nearby beach, and time spent in their own handcrafted cottage, unexpected fusions happen often here.  Songwriter residents Joanna Newsom and Thao Nguyen found spontaneous collaboration on Thoa’s song “Kindness Be Conceived” on the album “We the Common.” Listen to it here
